Chester-le-Street Methodist Church

The Church Choir

The Church Choir follows a long tradition of music in the Methodist Churches of Chester-le-Street and continues to provide singing leadership at the Sunday evening services in this Church.  We sing an anthem every Sunday and we lead the singing of the hymns.

We also perform a wide variety of concerts, usually twice a year here, and we also travel to provide concerts elsewhere, upon invitation.  In recent years we have performed concerts entitled ‘Last Night of the Proms’, ‘Mikado’ ‘Pirates, Peers and Gondoliers’, ‘Family Favourites’, ‘Simply Lyrical’ and Handel’s ‘Messiah’.

We regularly provide an hour of hymn-singing in the Pit Hill Chapel at Beamish Museum.  Our latest appearance was just last Sunday, 26th September and our next appearance there is on Saturday, 20th November.

Our next concert in this Church is on Saturday, 4th December and is entitled, ‘A Thrill of Hope’.

We rehearse here every Thursday from 7.30 – 9.00 pm and we’d give a warm welcome to anyone interested in joining us.

The Choir Concert in December which suffered from the wintry weather, and the Choir would like to thank the 80 hearty souls who were able to brave the snow, ice and freeing conditions to attend the concert.

Thanks also must go to Rachel and Ruth for coming along and giving another marvellous performance.

The concert included 'A Thrill of Hope' by Joel Raney. This Christmas musical dynamically retells the Christmas story into four parts:

A Thrill of Hope

A Gift of Love

A Prayer of Peace

A Song of Joy.

For each section the composer arranged a musical medley of familiar carols and hymns. Each section is introduced via a Biblical passage, read by Brian Straughan, followed by a narration which was read by Joan Evans. The choir members enjoyed tackling a new piece, which according to one 'source' could have made its premier performance at Chester-le-Street!
